Weekly Photo Challenge: Vivid

Traditions De France

photograph of Traditions De France store in Old Town Alexandria, VA

During the walking part of my commute through Old Town Alexandria I kept my eyes open for vivid images.  Normally I walk on the same side of the street as Traditions De France so I pass right by without really seeing it.  Viewed from across the street it really does make for a vivid image.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Reflections

photograph of trees reflected in a shallow creek

I had some other ideas for this week’s photo challenge but I was walking through the woods and the reflection of the trees in this stream caught my attention.  Perhaps too literal a treatment of this week’s theme but I liked the color and the stillness of the water at this spot.

Inside Saint Ignazio’s

HDR photograph of the inside of Saint Ignazio Church in Rome, ItalyIf you are ever in Rome I recommend visiting Saint Iganzio’s Church.  From the outside it doesn’t look very exciting but once you walk through the door you will be amazed.  I’m sure some art history buffs will argue but I thought the ceiling was better than the Sistine Chapel’s and there was no waiting in line and no admission.  What you can’t see in the picture is all of the amazing sculpture that decorates both sides of the church.

The lighting in these churches ranges from very dark to extremely bright.  To create this image I had to blend 5 different exposures together.

It’s Lonely At The Top

photograph of a single tree growing at the top of a cliff

This lonely tree grows on a rock outcropping in the Grand Canyon of The Yellowstone.  I photographed it one cloudy morning but the result was even, flat lighting, leaving the photo without much of a sense of perspective.  The next day I was lucky enough to return at just the right time.  The cliff face and tree were bathed in the warm, direct morning sunlight but the opposing canyon wall and the foreground elements were still in shadow.  As a result, the subject is literally highlighted.

Weekly Photo Challenge: From Above

photograph of a soda bottle and bottle cap

The late afternoon sun coming through my kitchen window provided an opportunity for a different perspective on a popular, refreshing soft drink.  You might even say this brand is a piece of Americana.  The marketing behind this beverage is so incredible, you’re sure to recognize it despite the fact the label is obscured and the bottle cap is completely out of focus.
