Pokeweed Berries

photograph of pokeweed berriesPokeweed is such a colorful plant.  With it’s pink stems, bright pink flower clusters, and dark blue berries it’s easy to forget it’s poisonous.  It wasn’t until after I took this picture I noticed the tiny spider on one of the berries.

Blue

Photograph of bright blue grapesThis picture was taken after a rain shower in the early evening of a warm September day.  Between the rain dripping off the porcelain vine berries and the bright, mixed colors of the ripening fruit I couldn’t resist getting a few photos of them.

Dragonfly Profile

macro photograph of a dragonfly profileHere’s another dragonfly photographed in my backyard.  This dragonfly seemed to rest with its wings pointing slightly forward.  Dragonflies prey on mosquitos and anything that reduces the mosquito population is a friend of mine.  Maybe its because we have so many mosquitos in the summer that so many dragonflies stake claim to our yard.

Pipe Vine Swallowtail

Searching for good photographic subjects on Big Walker Mountain, I happened upon a group of these large, blue and black butterflies.  My friend James Shelton, who is quite the amateur entomologist, tells me this butterfly is a Pipe Vine Swallowtail.
