Smyth County Courthouse

Low light image of the Smyth County Court House in Marion, VAI drove by the Smyth County Court House in Marion, VA and thought it would be a great subject.  When I came back to take pictures it seemed sort of boring in the light of day.  The building itself is pretty impressive but the lighting was all wrong.  I didn’t take a single photo that day but decided to come back after the sun went down and found it much more interesting at night.  This photo was one of the first I took.  As the evening went on the sky quickly grew darker and became black in the photos.

Blue Ridge Chandelier

photograph of Dale Chihuly's Blue Ridge ChandelierThe Blue Ridge Chandelier was one of the Chihuly works on display at the Virginia Museum of Fine Art (VMFA) in the fall of 2012.  This photo gives some perspective of the size of the chandelier, which is 18 feet tall.

Fawn In The Vineyard

photograph of a whitetail deer

I followed a small group of whitetail deer from quite a distance when they entered a vineyard.  This one seemed almost as curious about me as I was about it.  It allowed me to take a few photographs before disappearing deeper into the vineyard.

Forest Still Life

photograph of fallen bark, leaves and stones on the forest floorDuring a hike I noticed this piece of bark resting on stones by the side of the trail.  I was initially intrigued by the texture and patterns in the bark itself.  My first thought was to get a close up of the texture but when I noticed the bark was sitting between two shadows I thought it made for an interesting forest still life.

Albemarle at Sunset

Panoramic photograph of a rural landscape at sunsetI took this panoramic shot just east of the Appalachian mountains in Albemarle County,Virginia.  I happened to be passing by at sunset.  Despite the lack of clouds to provide a colorful sky, the valley itself seemed to almost glow in the late evening sun.  Like all of the photos on my blog, you can click on the image above to see a larger, more detailed version of it.
