Corolla Ghost

Photograph of a ghost crab in Corolla, North Carolina by Doug Couvillion

The beaches of the Outer Banks in North Carolina are full of ghost crabs.  These small crabs dig holes in the sand and roam the beaches looking for just about anything to eat.

The ghost crabs scurry back to their holes as soon as you approach and they are faster than they look.  Each hole seems to have only one entrance/exit.  If you’re patient and don’t move you can wait near an occupied hole and the crab will eventually come back out.

This year, I wanted to see if I could get close enough to take a decent photo of a crab with my iPhone.  It required a willingness to remain crouched in the sand, very still for several minutes but I was pretty happy with the results.

A few years ago I did the same thing but with a telephoto lens on my DSLR.  You can see that picture here: Crab Digging In The Sand.  I think I actually like this one better.
