Dragonfly in Dry Grass

photograph of a green dragonfly in dry, brown grass

“Don’t walk through that tall grass,” my Uncle warned.  “It’s full of chiggers.”  I decided to go anyway; there were some lovely wildflowers I wanted to shoot and I’ve survived worse than a few chigger bites.  Two weeks later my ankles finally stopped itching.  The wildflower shots were okay but this dragonfly made the itching worth it.  If I didn’t know better I would sweat it’s actually smiling.

  1. Lovely shot – I love catching dragonflies on camera. What are chiggers?

I’m busy suffering the after effects of Mosquitos and midgies but have also been bitten by tsetse flies and ‘clegs’ (British version of a tsetse fly). Please tell me I don’t have to worry about another biting blighter somewhere in the world? 🙂

    1. Thanks Laura. Chiggers are also known as harvest mites or red bugs. They are related to ticks but are much smaller. They tend to live in tall grass and leaf litter. Chigger bites are very itchy, similar to that of a mosquito.
